BASIC GLUTATHIONE ADMINISTRATION CONT

QUESTION: Can I put Glutathione in an IV bag with other nutrients?
ANSWER: The point with infusing it is to preserve the reduced glutathione (GSH) you paid the pharmacy to make until it gets into the patient’s body. If you mix it in many nutrient IV bags it will react with other nutrients and oxidize to GSSG. This isn’t a total waste, but then pushes the body to reduce it again (something people who need IV GSH don’t have a lot of extra energy biologically to do). So a push is fine, and most of the GSH will be sucked up by the liver and neuronal tissues anyway which is where you want it. People espouse the “futility of IV glutathione” (people who don’t use it, that is) because of the short life it has once in the system – but the time isn’t the issue it is getting it in, and having enough GSH cofactors to keep it cycling. On a side note we don’t push GSH for time reasons but put it in a 100 mL NS bag – but that’s just because we don’t have time to push it.
