#127 Chronic Viral Disorders (EBV-HHV) Updates

Watch LIVE on Tuesday May 20th, 2025 @ 5:30 PM PST

Program Abstract:

Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) has had an unusual evolution in acute and chronic illness care and management. Partially this is due to the relatively short history of modern virology evolving concurrently with our understanding of EBV. EBV went from a known cause of “Mono” with very rudimentary testing, to the “cause of everything”, to a seeming enigma of modern virological import. In this discussion we will look at the history of the virus, evolution and importance of various tests, an extensive literature review, clinical presentations and modern understandings. The specific evolution of EBV testing will be informed by Dr. Anderson’s collaboration with the virologist who was the original inventor of EBV and other HHV testing platforms. The relationship of EBV to cancer and autoimmunity will also be discussed. The critical clinical determinants of assessing the “sick user” versus the “well user” effect will also be incorporated, leading to a summary of where we are now and how to manage this nuanced clinical entity.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define the biology of EBV as an HHV virus
  • Describe the known role of EBV and HHV in acute and chronic infections
  • Define the EBV associated non-infectious diseases
  • Discuss testing methodologies and platforms bases, uses, and misuses.
  • Discuss cross-reactivity in testing platforms
  • Describe appropriate clinical interventions and monitoring for EBV infection
